A photograph captures a moment, but what if those moments could speak?
Tempus Volat is a study of what those moments might have to say. Brenna Layne and Cara Walton have collaborated through the media of photography and written word to provide a voice for places and objects captured in pixels and plastic.
Brenna has been a writer all her life. She lives in the rural Shenandoah Valley with her husband, two pirates, and an ever-growing menagerie of critters. She writes fantasy for children and adults, and is currently seeking a literary agent. She blogs weekly at www.brennalayne.com.
Artist's Statement:
I write because I can't not write. Writing is how I make sense of the world, how I process what I observe and what happens to me.
Literature is about connection--across time, space, and the myriad variations of human experience that divide us. Fantasy offers a unique kind of connection, as it makes literal and visible the transformative magic of our universe and our relationships with each other. For me, magic is representative of the enormous potential of the human spirit, our power to change both ourselves and our circumstances, and to reach out across the divide and make contact with each other and with the better angels (or maybe dragons) of our natures.
This collaboration with Cara has challenged and stretched my writing in new and exciting ways. I'm a novelist first, and not used to thinking in neat, tidy packages of words. The opportunity to offer short reactions to her photographs has provided me with a more poetic outlet--one in which every word is inescapably significant and story is more a suggestion than a given.
Cara Walton
Cara Walton is a purely accidental artist. She teaches high school students World History and likes to take pictures. Photography and art help her to stay sane in dealing with the day-to-day stress of her job and life in general.
She lives in Harrisonburg with her husband, daughter, two cats, and an obscene amount of Star Wars toys and other geeky items.
Cara has had photography displayed in various venues in Harrisonburg including Larkin Arts, Spitzer Art Center, Clementine, and The Artful Dodger. She was awarded an Advancing the Arts Grant from the Arts Council of the Valley in 2014 and recently had work accepted in juried competitions at the Shenandoah Valley Arts Center in Waynesboro, the 1650 gallery in Los Angeles CA, and ArtSpace in Richmond, VA. Her work was also included in a digital display in the Louvre in Paris as part of the opening reception of the Exposure Awards 2015.

Tempus Volat.....Time Flies
One of my favorite songs is "Time Stand Still" by Rush. As I've gotten older, the song holds so much more meaning for me than it used to, as I learn to appreciate the passage of time and also fear it. Time moves on, our children grow older, our parents grow older, we...grow older. I have always loved Brenna's writing, and we tossed around the idea of collaborating on a show for a while. I decided to see if she wanted to collaborate on the "Word" show at Spitzer Art Center last year and we were very happy with the piece we created. That piece inspired more collaboration and this show is the result.
I frequently go out and photograph alone...I love the quiet and the uninterrupted time to think about the image I want to capture and the story that I'm trying to tell. Brenna's lovely words fill in the rest of the story.
"Time stand still. I'm looking back, but I want to look around me now...see more of the people and the places that surround me now. "
